Brain Injury Association - Northland

The Brain Injury Association of New Zealand (BIANZ) is a nationwide organisation with sixteen regional offices, including Auckland and Northland. The national office is also based in Auckland on the North Shore. BIANZ provides information, education, support, and liaison with other agencies to people and their families dealing with a brain injury.

Brain injuries, also sometimes referred to as head injuries fall into two groups. An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can occur as a result of strokes, tumours and other medical problems including drug and alcohol abuse. A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when damage is caused to the brain by an external force such as in a car accident, assault or sporting accident. TBI's are commonly covered by ACC. The most common TBI is concussion. BIANZ employs Liaison Officers and Education Advisors.
