Where can I get financial assistance for my child's glasses?

A spectacle subsidy is available to all children 15 years and younger where the parent, guardian or child has a current Community Services Card or the child holds a High User Health card.

The amount of the subsidy is $287.50 (including GST) plus an additional $51.11 (including GST) if the child requires adult size frames. The subsidy is available every 12 months and can be used for vision test costs, lenses, frames, eye patches and repairs.

When taking your child to the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist you need to ensure that they are registered with Enable New Zealand for the Spectacle Subsidy scheme. You should confirm this with them when making an appointment for your child to have a vision test.

You can also telephone the Enable New Zealand Information Team on 0800 17 1981 to find out who are the registered Optometrists/Ophthalmologists closest to you.
