Buildings and the Law

Buildings (except for private dwellings) built or modified after 1992 are required to comply with the requirements of the Building Act 1992. Section 6(2)(e) of this Act, requires that reasonable and adequate provision is made for people with disabilities who wish to use the building and facilities.

Standards New Zealand produce the publication "Design for Access and Mobility - Buildings and Associated Facilities NZS 4121:2001". It provides all the dimensions required for a building or facility to comply with the Building Act. Copies of this publication are available from government bookshops. Fire Evacuation Compliance
The Fire Service Act 1975 [sec 21A] and Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations 1992 set out the criteria and requirements for the implementation and maintenance of Fire Evacuation Schemes and Evacuation Procedures.

Offer a service called Suitable Homes which is a free service to help people with physical disabilities into a modified home suitable for their requirements.
